Use this flowchart to narrow the cause in 30 seconds:

- Yes → the problem is on your end. Continue below.
- No → it’s down for everyone. Wait for OpenAI to resolve it.
- Can you load chatgpt.com at all?
- No (connection refused / timeout) → DNS, ISP, or firewall issue on your end.
- Loads but can’t log in → see our ChatGPT login page.
- Loads and logs in but responses fail → browser extension or session issue. Try incognito.
- Does it work on a different device or network?
- Works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi → ISP, router, or DNS issue.
- Works on another computer on the same network → your computer’s state.
- Fails everywhere → either an account issue or a real outage our monitor hasn’t caught yet.
Signs It’s Just You
- Your friends say ChatGPT works for them right now.
- Our status card shows operational.
- The problem only happens in one browser or one device.
- You get specific account-related errors (“access denied”, “account suspended”, billing warnings).
- Your VPN is on.
Signs It’s Everyone
- Our status card shows a partial or major outage.
- Social media is flooded with “is ChatGPT down?” posts (check X/Twitter and Reddit).
- Errors appear across multiple devices and networks.
- The official OpenAI status page has an open incident.
